Characteristics, Management, and Mortality Differences in Pediatric Patients with Pleural Effusion Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The research aims to determine the differences in characteristics, management, and mortality of pediatric patients with pleural effusion before and during the Covid-19 pandemic; A cross-sectional study of 60 patient from February 2018 to March 2022 at RSUP. Dr. M. Djamil Padang, obtained through random sampling. Data analyse using univariate and bivariate, with bivariate analysis using Chi-square Test with significance at p <0.05; Results: Out of 60 samples, an increased number of patients aged 2-5 years during the Covid-19 pandemic (23.3%) was found, complaints before hospital admission >4 weeks were higher before Covid-19 at 23.3% (p <0.05), LDH levels in pleural effusion fluid during Covid-19 were higher at 5,277 + 10,664 (p <0.05). Staphylococcus aureus from blood cultures was higher during Covid-19 (16.7%). The use of CPAP before and during Covid-19 was 20% vs 16.7%, and ventilator use was 33.3% vs 36.7%, the most commonly used antibiotics were Ampicillin (63.3% vs 46.7%) and Gentamicin (50.0% vs 33.3%). Patient mortality was higher during Covid-19 (36.7%), although not statistically significant (p> 0.05); There were significant differences in the duration of complaints before hospital admission and LDH levels in pleural effusion fluid, but the management and mortality did not show significant differences.
